HOME - HISTORY
The West African SAHARA network is part of the SAHARA (Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS Research Alliance) Program, which was initiated by the Human Science Research Council based in Cape Town, South Africa. This program was developed by Dr. Olive Shisana because of the following reasons :
Research on social aspects of the epidemic is insufficient.
The research quality in the social sciences is affected by a deficit in methodology rigor and by insufficient comparative studies.
There are a weak number of exchanges and circulation of information leading to unnecessary repetition of research and work, ultimately resulting in the unnecessary use of technical, financial and human resources.
Research results seem to have very little influence on policies, NGO programs and projects, governments and funding agencies.
Since the beginning, the SAHARA program has worked with The New Partnership for Economic Development in Africa (NEPAD).
